Outreach

“The church has left the building” sums up Hillcrest’s commitment to reaching out beyond our congregation.  We are pleased to offer various opportunities for you to give of your time, your talents, and your dollars in sharing the love of Christ with others.

Micah Ministry is focused on ministry to impoverished adults and children and justice work and racial reconciliation across denominational/ religious lines. It has become the largest urban mission of the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, in the largest Christian Church Region of the U.S.

Our goal is to serve those who show up a fine dinner and to treat them as our guest. Avoiding serving lines will promote dignity and encourage conversation and interaction. We want to recognize them as part of our community.

We are an interfaith homelessness intervention program that helps restore stability to situationally homeless families in Johnson County. We have fed, housed, educated and empowered hundreds of wonderful people, thanks to our network of 40 congregations and individual supporters. Last year, more than 75% of our guests obtained permanent housing after 90 to 180 days with us.

Mission Trips

We affirm that while our faith is personal, it is not private. That is why you’ll often find members of Hillcrest Christian Church “on the road again,” engaged in mission work across the United States and in other countries.

In cooperation with Disciples Volunteering, our congregation annually takes a mission trip to a community affected by a natural disaster—tornado, flood, or hurricane. Since 2008, we have taken groups of volunteers to Greensburg, Kansas; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Slidell, Louisiana; and Nashville, Tennessee.

Hillcrest youth also look forward to their summer mission trip experiences. The youth have traveled to St. Louis, Missouri; Ft. Worth, Texas; and most recently, Joplin, Missouri, where they helped sponsor a community-wide Vacation Bible School.

Our mission trip opportunities are not limited to sites in the United States. Hillcrest has been represented at mission stations in Jamaica and Costa Rica.

Those who participate on our mission trips return with the conviction that through their service, they received as much, if not more, than they gave. In being a blessing to others, they themselves were blessed.

If you’d like to learn more about our upcoming mission trips, please call the Hillcrest office (913-663-2822), use the Contact Us form at the bottom of this page or join us for our weekly service at 10:45 a.m. on Sundays and speak with Pastor Lara.
